Feedback has rolled in, amounting to many men telling me that they have serious roadblocks to getting into physical fitness. Many feel they cannot join gyms, for instance. Three disturbing reasons seem to emerge as roadblocks for ex-gays to get into serious physical fitness:
1. They feel they cannot deal with the intense lust, being around muscular men.
2. They have very bad memories of how they were treated in exercise and sports environments. Many say they were first molested in such places while others were bad at sports and brutally mocked.
3. They have negative thoughts about the vanity of gyms, because they remember clearly that in their time as gay men, exercise was entirely oriented toward getting a visibly impressive body, and something about exercise feels masturbatory and self-absorbed.
Daren Mehl joins me for this special interview, to talk about how he overcame these very obstacles. He and I, after conferring, agree that even if you can find ways to avoid always working out at gyms, you should not dismiss gym memberships entirely because of the fellowship and social interaction.
